Among the luminous phenomena that have awakened interest are those that give off light without heat, or that do so without an apparent cause, such as a fire, a bonfire or the passage of an electric current. Well today we will talk about “bioluminescence in Holbox”
Bioluminescence in Holbox
From time immemorial, substances and animals were known that glowed in the shadows, so they aroused curiosity and superstition.
Speaking of bioluminescence, we refer to an emission of light by living organisms, without appreciable heat. Light results from a chemical reaction of enzymes and certain other substances in organisms. Bacteria, algae, fungi and various invertebrate animals have bioluminescent species.
This phenomena is not something you see every day or everywhere, much less at the seashore. However, in the Riviera Maya we have the joy of being able to enjoy the beautiful view of the bioluminescence of the so-called luminous plankton, which is observed in the months of the arrival of the whale shark, that is, from May to September.
During this time light flashes appear on the surface which is colored with silver, green and blue tones, sometimes it is so bright that it is possible to see fish swimming in the dark, and the best thing is that, this scene, besides being intriguing, is 100% safe, so it is possible to enter the water to enjoy such a particular phenomenon without risk of injury.
The scientific explanation for the bioluminescence in these waters is that the microorganisms generate flashes of light when they are disturbed by the waves breaking on the shore or when the water is agitated by some other cause.
The most important thing is that you and your whole family can touch the waters without any risk, so even though it can only be seen at night, everyone can attend to witness this magical natural event!
Even though Cancun and the Riviera Maya have a thousand and one things to do, Holbox’s bioluminescence is something you won’t want to miss, since there are very few places in the country where it can be appreciated, among them Campeche; Manialtpec and Chacahua lagoons in Oaxaca and Bucerias in Nayarit.
