ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF CANCUN
Organized by the families of the city’s founders, this month-long celebration takes place in various downtown venues and features masses, music, exhibitions, and a parade down Tulum Avenue. (April) ·
FESTIVAL OF THE OCEANS
From mid-May to mid-June, this event is designed to promote ocean conservation. Events include concerts, children’s drawing contests, beach clean-up, and competitive cooking, along with tons of fun beach and ocean activities. THE DAY OUT OF TIME
according to the Mayan calendar, July 26 is the first day of the New Year. The most important day of celebration comes on the 25th, The day out of time or The day out of time. This is a day to reflect on the past year and the lessons learned, as well as a day when anything can happen.
The festivities are scattered throughout the Riviera Maya, with the largest taking place in Tulum, lasting up to five days, and the smallest at various Cancun resorts. (July) ·
ISLA MUJERES WHALE SHARK FESTIVAL
Week-long celebration of the whale shark, including daily family activities at the main fair, with sand sculpture and piñata contests, a parade, live music, and contests of food with local chefs. ZOUKMX
Ten-day music and dance festival in Playa del Carmen, on the beach and in the jungle. This event begins with several workshops for teachers, followed by days and nights at the end of the dance for zouk, a fast paced, Caribbean dance music. (August) ·
SALSA CASINO MAYAN CONGRESS
celebration of four days of salsa dancing with live music, parties and workshops. Classes expand from traditional salsa to include Afro-Cuban dance, Casino Wheel, Rumba, Folklore, and more. (September) ·
AUTUMN EQUINOX AT CHICHEN ITZA
Occurs annually on September 22, the first day of autumn, when the afternoon light hits the El Castillo temple pyramid just to the right, it reveals a shadowy image of the god of the feathered serpent Kukulkan, just as it does in spring. However, September is the rainiest month of the year and sometimes cloud cover prevents Kukulkan from showing up. Also, with daylight saving time, the event occurs after the park is closed at night. CANCUN JAZZ FESTIVAL
Four-day music festival featuring some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz. This all-inclusive festival takes place at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, near Tulum. The pre-festival concerts will take place a few days before the main event. (October) ·
HALLOWEEN
Traditionally, on this day, residents bring flowers and candles to the graves of their loved ones on the night of October 31; However, in Cancun and many other popular tourist destinations, it is celebrated in a similar way to how it is done in the US, with children dressing up and doing tricks or treats, and adults wearing costumes going to bars and clubs. DAY OF THE DEAD
November 1-2. There are usually parties in the disco area in the Hotel Zone, but travelers can also go to the Center for a more traditional experience in one of the many parks, including Parque Las Palapas, Luum Pakul, or Centro Cultural of the Arts. CANCUN MARATHON
also known as the most beautiful marathon in the world. The marathon course begins and ends in the city center, with most of the course following Kukulkan Boulevard along the Hotel Zone, past the beach and the lagoon. A live mariachi band awaits the runners at the finish line. (December) · SUNSET BOAT PARADE: annual event, festive in the Garden of Art, the sculpture park in front of the Nichupté Lagoon. A parade of illuminated and decorated boats begins at dusk, with live music, food, and craft vendors. Familiar and always free. (December) ·
NEW YEARS EVE: On December 31, Cancun celebrates New Years Eve similar to much of the rest of the world, with great parties and fireworks.
Playa del Carmen, about an hour south of downtown Cancun, is usually the place to be, where the party starts at dawn and lasts until the New Year. Many parties can also be found in Cancun, and fireworks are fired over the lagoon, visible from all hotels and resorts with rooms facing it, as well as from hallways. (December)
