According to Mayan civilization mythology, she had 13 children with Itzamná, founder of Chichén Itzá and god of the sky, day, night and wisdom. The name of the island has its origin in the numerous feminine images of the figure of the goddess, which the Spaniards found upon their arrival to the island.

This is one of the specialties of the gastronomy of the island par excellence. It is prepared with an ancient Mayan recipe.

Its preparation is quite elaborated and it is prepared in several restaurants, among them La Casa del Tikinxic, in Lanceros Beach, a place with more than 70 years of tradition.

The building has arches, wells and especially beautiful ornate gardens. Legend has it that the woman for whom the house was built never set foot in it.

It serves as a refuge for birds, more than 150 species, including the gray pelican, the peregrine falcon, the giant heron, the white-bellied booby and the magnificent frigate bird.

It contains reefs, a rich flora and fauna. The only way to reach this location is by sea from Cancun or from Isla Mujeres.
