Things to Do in Holbox
Holbox is a peaceful, bohemian island full of natural beauty in the Mexican Caribbean. Here you’ll find tips on where it is, how to get there, where to stay and what to do to make the most of your visit.
Where Is Holbox?
Holbox Island is located north of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon in front of the port of Chiquilá, from where the ferries depart to the island.
Holbox is part of a natural reserve and is known for its turquoise waters, marine life, birds, mangroves and a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for disconnecting from city stress.
How to Get to Holbox
To get to Holbox, you must first arrive at the port of Chiquilá, the official departure point for ferries to the island. From there, you’ll take a boat that crosses in approximately 20–25 minutes.
The most common ways to get to Chiquilá are:
- Private transportation from Cancun Airport, Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum.
- Shared shuttle or bus from Cancun or Playa del Carmen.
- Rental car, leaving the vehicle in paid parking lots in Chiquilá.
About the Island
Holbox is a small island with sandy streets and no conventional car traffic. The main ways to get around are golf carts, bicycles and walking. The atmosphere is relaxed, bohemian and very focused on nature and rest.
It’s ideal for couples, families and travelers looking for a more authentic, less crowded destination with a strong connection to the natural surroundings: sea, mangroves, marine life and birds.

Things to Do in Holbox
Although Holbox is perfect for relaxing, it also offers several activities that combine nature, adventure and unique experiences in the Mexican Caribbean.
Snorkeling with the Whale Shark
One of the most famous experiences in Holbox is snorkeling with the whale shark, the largest fish in the world. In season (generally from June to September), you can book tours that take you offshore to swim near these gentle giants, always with authorized guides and strict protection rules.
See the Bioluminescent Water
Bioluminescence is one of Holbox’s most magical spectacles. On certain nights, the sea lights up with blue sparkles when you walk along the shore or move the water. The best conditions are usually dark nights, away from the full moon.
Try Water Sports
If you enjoy staying active, in Holbox you can try paddle boarding, kayaking, kitesurfing (in season) and boat rides. The shallow, calm sea in many areas is ideal for these activities.
Just Relax
One of the best things to do in Holbox is literally to do nothing. Relax in a hammock over the water, sunbathe, read, watch the sunset and enjoy the peace — it’s all part of the Holbox experience.
Explore the Island and Eat a Marquesita
Walking or biking through Holbox’s sandy streets is an activity in itself: you’ll see murals, small shops, cafés, the main square and the island’s bohemian vibe. And between strolls, nothing better than trying a marquesita (a typical local dessert), an ice cream or a fresh ceviche by the sea.
